Rescue excavation project – Prof Friederike Seyfried
On Tuesday, October 3 at 18:00, the Museo Egizio will host an important conference by Dr.Friederike Seyfried, a member of the Museum’s scientific committee, and Director fo the Ägyptisches Museum und Papyrussammlung Berlin.
During this meeting, which will be held in English, Dr. Seyfried will present the excavation activities of the necropoli on the west shore of Aswan, handled by the German Egyptian mission “Qubbet el-Hawa North”. The mission began in 2015 with a collaboration between the inspectorate of Aswan and the Ägyptisches Museum und Papyrussammlung of Berlin.
The necropoli were discovered during an extension of the Nubian village. In 2014, the area was secured thanks to the interventions of the Ancient Egyptian Service who immediatly produced the first archaeological documentation.
Between 2015 and 2017, two excavation campaigns took place, and brought forward 9 datable tombs between the Old and New Kingdoms belonging to an unknown elite. Since January, the project has been financed by the DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft), making it possible to continue the campaign in the necropoli, which extends to an area of about 25.000 square meters. The intent in this campaign is to bring to light aspects related to funerary uses, settlements and local administration.
