Provincial centres that acted as administrative links were sited along the length of the Nile. Two of these settlements were excavated by the Museum (Gebelein and Assiut) by the director of the Museum Ernesto Schiaparelli and his collaborator Giulio Farina between 1900 and 1940, and these document the Middle Kingdom.
