Tomb of the Unknown

First Floor - Gallery III

An Unplundered Tomb of Unidentified men. This small gallery is dedicated to an exceptional intact tomb complex discovered by Ernesto Schiaparelli during his excavation campaigns at Gebelein.

The contents date to the period of the pyramids in the Old Kingdom.

The earliest mummified human remains in the Museo Egizio come from this tomb. The best-preserved mummy (158 cm tall) was located inside a stone coffin in the largest of three chambers. The mummy’s limbs were wrapped separately and the bandages over the face were painted with facial features and hair in black pigment.
