Official opening of “Transforming the Egyptian Museum” project

In December 2018 the European Union Delegation Cairo, The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities (MoTA) and a consortium of 5 composed of the Egyptian Museum Cairo and 5 European Museums, signed a contract labelled as technical assistance and called ‘Transforming the Egyptian Museum Cairo’. The project was designed to last 3 years and involved three principal workpackages (WP) divided amongst the consortium members according to their areas of expertise: WP 1 has been drafted as a contribution to enhance the quality of the exhibition in some galleries on the ground floor as a case study of what could be achieved through an implementation of WP2. WP 1 has been divided among the curators of the Egyptian museum and the colleagues of Turin, Leiden and London. WP2 focused on develop a road map for the EMC and was the main aim of the ‘Transforming the Egyptian Museum Cairo’ project. This complex and manifold challenge was shouldered and carried out by all project partners. WP 3 addressed the replacement of the treasures of Tutankhamun by the treasure of Tanis by the curators of the EMC and the colleagues from the Louvre. Special needs relating to WP1 and WP2 WP3, such as the refurbishment of the external appearance of the galleries and the placement of additional artificial lighting, were carried out by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and with the cooperation of Environmental Quality International (EQI).
The principal idea behind the launch of the EU cooperation between the MoTA, the Egyptian Museum in Cairo and 5 Europeans Museum was to envisage a future for the EMC against a background of two new major museums in Cairo, the Grand Egyptian Museum and the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, and the wider growth of the Egyptian museum sector. The EMC unquestionably forms the backbone for all the other museological outputs in Egypt and should be held in the highest regard. Since its opening in 1902, the EMC has been an unmatched success story and its listed building, including its collections, deserves both our utmost respect and to be listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site. Thus, the principal aim of the project ‘Transforming the Egyptian Museum Cairo’ , was to strengthen the status of the EMC by outlining possible strategies for a masterplan, including the concept for a complete overhaul of the building and to provide examples of enhanced displays in some of the galleries.
The results achieved by the ‘Transforming the Egyptian Museum Cairo’ project are substantial. The very tight and productive cooperation between the EMC colleagues and their European partners has created a new kind of mutual understanding and respect. This represent the foundation on which the splendid future of EMC can be build upon.
It has been a wonderful cooperative project and thanks to the full support and constant dialogue with the main partner, the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, we have been able to achieve all our goals. Our sincere thanks go to HE Minister Ahmed Issa, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, to HE Christian Berger, Head of EU Delegation to Cairo and to Prof. Dr. Ali Abdel Halim, Director general of the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. For the entire duration of the project Prof. Dr. Khaled el-Enany and Dr. Mustafa Waziri have been working with us side by side. في ديسمبر 2018، وقعت سفارة الاتحاد الأوروبي بالقاهرة ووزارة السياحة والآثار واتحاد مؤلف من خمس متاحف أوروبية عقدًا لمشروع الدعم الفني `` تطوير المتحف المصري بالقاهرة ''. تم تصميم المشروع ليستمر لمدة ثلاث سنوات، حيث اشتمل على ثلاث حزم عمل رئيسية مقسمة بين أعضاء الاتحاد وفقًا لمجالات خبرتهم: تمت صياغة حزمة العمل الاولى كمساهمة في تحسين جودة العرض المتحفي في بعض قاعات العرض في الطابق الأرضي مثل دراسة حالة لما يمكن تحقيقه من خلال تنفيذ حزمة العمل الثانية. تم تقسيم حزمة العمل الاولى بين أمناء المتحف المصري والزملاء من متاحف تورينو ولايدن والمتحف البريطاني.
بينما ركزت حزمة العمل الثانية على تطوير خارطة طريق لـلمتحف المصري، اذ يمثل ذلك المخرج الرئيسي لمشروع "تطوير المتحف المصري بالقاهرة". هذا التحدي المعقد تم تنفيذه من قبل جميع شركاء المشروع. في حين تناولت حزمة العمل الثالثة عرض كنوز تانيس في قاعات عرض اثار الملك توت عنخ امون بالتعاون بين فريق المتحف المصري والزملاء من متحف اللوفر. تم تنفيذ الاحتياجات الخاصة المتعلقة بـحزمتي العمل الأولى والثالثة، مثل تطوير سيناريو العرض ووضع وحدات إضاءة اصطناعية إضافية، من قبل وزارة السياحة والآثار وبالتعاون مع مؤسسة نوعية البيئة الدولية (EQI).
كانت الفكرة الرئيسية وراء إطلاق تعاون الاتحاد الأوروبي بين وزارة السياحة والآثار والمتحف المصري في القاهرة و خمس متاحف أوروبية هو تصور مستقبل المتحف على خلفية افتتاح متحفين رئيسيين جديدين في القاهرة (المتحف المصري الكبير والمتحف القومي للحضارة المصرية)، والنمو الواسع لقطاع المتاحف المصرية. يشكل المتحف المصري بالقاهرة بلا شك العمود الفقري لجميع المخرجات المتحفية الأخرى في مصر ويجب أن يحظى بأعلى درجات الاهتمام. منذ افتتاحه في عام 1902، مثل المتحف المصري قصة نجاح لا مثيل لها ، بما في ذلك مبناه التاريخي و مجموعاته النادرة ، لذا يستحق أقصى درجات اهتمامنا وأن يتم إدراجه كموقع للتراث العالمي عل قائمة اليونسكو. وبالتالي، كان الهدف الرئيسي لمشروع `` تطوير المتحف المصري بالقاهرة، هو تعزيز مكانة المتحف من خلال تحديد الاستراتيجيات الممكنة لخطة التطوير الشامل ، بما في ذلك الترميم الكامل للمبنى وتقديم أمثلة على العروض المطورة في بعض من قاعات العرض.
ان النتائج التي حققها مشروع تطوير المتحف المصري بالقاهرة نتائج كبيرة. اذ أدى التعاون الوثيق والمثمر للغاية بين الزملاء في المتحف المصري وشركائهم الأوروبيين إلى خلق نوع جديد من التفاهم والاحترام المتبادلين. وهذا يمثل الأساس الذي يمكن أن يُبنى عليه المستقبل الرائع للمتحف المصري بالقاهرة.
لقد كان هذا المشروع مشروعًا مشتركا رائعًا وبفضل الدعم الكامل والحوار المستمر مع الشريك الرئيسي وزارة السياحة والآثار، تمكنا من تحقيق جميع أهدافنا. خالص شكرنا لمعالي الوزير السيد/أحمد عيسى وزير السياحة والآثار، ومعالي السيد/ كريستيان بيرجر، رئيس وفد الاتحاد الأوروبي بالقاهرة وإلى السيد ا.د/ علي عبد الحليم مدير عام المتحف المصري بالقاهرة.
