How can museums serve as places for the preservation and construction of memory?

How can they address the challenges of the future without betraying their history?

How can they navigate the new phase they are going through by rethinking their past and giving meaning to their existence today?

Today, museums aim to thoroughly understand the mechanisms of change, fostering relationships and influencing society. Considering the new definition of a museum provided by ICOM and the challenges awaiting cultural institutions, the Egyptian Museum is planning a series of events for 2023 and 2024 under the title "What is a museum?" featuring directors of some of the most important international museums in conversation with Christian Greco. Research, digitization, education, inclusion, and heritage preservation are the topics that will be addressed to reconsider the role museums can play in contemporary society.

The guest for the conversation on March 7, 2024, at 6:00 PM will be Anna-Vasiliki Karapanagiotou, Director of the the Hellenic National Archaeological Museum of Athens.

The event will take place in the Conference Room of the Museum, and admission is free with reservations made through Eventbrite (seats will be held until 6:00 PM). Click HERE to book your place.

The meeting will also be broadcast live on the Museum's Facebook page and YouTube channel.
