Third Vatican Coffin Conference: When Coffins Speak: at the Crossroads of Research and Practice
International Conference: 24–27 February 2027, Vatican Museums
In loving memory of Sandrine Pagès-Camagna
The Vatican Coffin Project is an international project, launched in 2008 by the Department of Egyptian Antiquities of the Vatican Museums, with the Egyptian Museum among its partners.
Over the years, it has focused on the study of the “yellow coffins” through collaboration between Egyptological research, conservation science, and diagnostic analysis, deepening knowledge of the materials used in their production, the construction and decoration techniques, and the traditions of the workshops that created them.
When Coffins Speak encourages contributors to extend that dialogue beyond established chronological and typological boundaries, embracing new approaches, datasets, and interpretative frameworks.
The aim is to study coffins within contexts encompassing tombs, papyri, cartonnage mummy cases, and other funerary artefacts, from the New Kingdom to the Late Period.
